MTN Ghana today reiterated its commitment to increasing internet penetration in Ghana in order to bridge the digital gap in the country and Africa as a whole. International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has said that internet penetration in Africa stood at 11.5%, and that of Ghana stood at 5.2%. But MTN has reaffirmed its commitment to changing the status quo by driving internet access and data usage in the country through the provision of the best broadband services at affordable and need-specific data bundles in order to help Ghana leap into the digital age. MTN made this known when it engaged News Editors in the Cape Coast Municipality and surrounding areas during an editors’ forum organised by the company to interact with journalists, update them on the company and the industry as a whole and receive feedback on the network’s operations in the Central Region. MTN also used the forum to express its gratitude to the media for the diverse ways in which they have supported MTN in disseminating information on its activities to the public and also in maintaining its leadership position in the industry. MTN expressed concerned about the occasional network disruptions which affect its service delivery since it has promised to provide its subscribers with world class telecommunications service. The company attributed the disruptions largely to fibre cables which get cut as a result of road construction works currently ongoing in some parts of the country. While MTN’s technical team continues to work frantically to expedite the repair of cut fibre, the telecom giant is also engaging the relevant agencies to find a lasting solution to these challenges. MTN thus appealed to its subscribers to bear with them while a lasting solution is being sought. “I trust that we all appreciate the fact that the construction of roads is also a very important intervention by the government to open up the country and so we appeal to our subscribers to bear with us as we work towards finding a permanent solution to the problem,” Cynthia Lumor, Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana said at the forum. She indicated that MTN dedicated the whole month of September to educating people on the importance of data services and the various data offerings available on the MTN network. She added that MTN had invested heavily in the deployment of state of the art switch centres in Accra and Kumasi as well as the landing in Ghana of the West Africa Cables System which will be operational early next year to offer even better and faster internet services to its subscribers. Mrs. Lumor assured the media of MTN’s commitment to sustain such media encounters in order to provide updates on the telecoms industry while enhancing public awareness of telecommunication technology availability in Ghana. She also pledged that MTN would continue to enrich the lives of subscribers through improved data packages.
