The Federal Airport Authority has redirected all flight activities from Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed Airport to the D wing following a fire incident.
FAAN stated that engineers at the airport have deactivated power in the entire E wing to address the fire, which ignited around 5:29 am on Thursday, April 25, 2024.
In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, it was revealed that smoke initially emerged from the E54 bridge, causing concern among airport occupants.
FAAN, along with the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services team, swiftly restored order after some airport staff and passengers panicked.
The statement explained, “Smoke was observed emanating from the E54 Bridge, prompting electrical engineers to promptly cut off power to the entire E Wing.
“The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) team promptly responded, reaching the scene by 05:30 hrs. Preliminary indications suggest sparks from an electrical unit as the likely cause, though a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. The situation, which escalated into a fire, was contained by 06:41 hrs. Measures to ventilate the building from smoke are ongoing. Meanwhile, all flight operations at Terminal 1 of MMA have been diverted to the D Wing. Further updates will be provided shortly.”
