With a mission to improve and protect the health of Ghanaians, Unilever Ghana has introduced Pureit, a unique home-based water purification device. The company says, Pureit is specially designed to give complete protection from germs, bacteria and virus through its 5 purification steps and a remarkable “Programmed Germ Kill Technology” to provide the odorless natural taste of water. Pureit water purifier, which works without electricity, according to officials of Unilever, has met a rigorous international criteria of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), USA, certified by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has also been endorsed by the Ghana Standards Authority. Speaking at the launch, the Managing Director of Unilever Ghana, Maidi Akutu, said innovative, low-cost filter is part of Unilever’s contribution to provide consumers with safe drinking water. According to her, over 80 percent of diseases in the country are water borne. The introduction of Pureit, she said, is to ensure Unilever fulfill its goal of making safe drinking water available and affordable to 500 million people by 2020. “Unilever is involved in trying to reduce mortality of children under the age of five globally and providing safe drinking water is a critical part of this programme” she added. The Unilever Ghana MD indicated that United Nations has estimated that the number of people without safe drinking water could double by 2025 therefore this latest innovation furthers Unilever’s vision to double the size of the business whilst reducing its environmental footprint and increasing its positive social impact. Maidi Akutu urged consumers to patronize Pureit water purifier for safer and hygienic drinking water. “By having the Pureit system, it almost does not matter what the original source of our water is, it will purify it and give you safe drinking water” she added. In a speech read on her behalf, the Minister of Health, Sherry Ayittey commended Unilever for the wonderful initiative. She said less than eight percent of Ghanaians treat drinking water before use which she says he resulted in the increase in diarrhea and cholera cases in the country. Madam Sherry Ayitteh announced government’s plans to partner with socially responsible companies in Ghana to focus on household water treatment and safe storage devices that are affordable and simple-to use technologies like Pureit. “We are happy Unilever have taken a step towards protecting the lives of Ghanaians against water borne diseases by the introduction of this water purifier”, she added.
