The African University of Science and Technology in Abuja (AUST – Abuja) was established by the Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI) in 2007 as the first of a Pan-African Network of Institutes of Science and Technology and Centers of Excellence located across the continent. AUST Abuja, a National Universities Commission (NUC) accredited university, intends to become a world class research oriented institution whose final objectives are to train and develop the next generation of African Scientists and Engineers and impact profoundly the continent’s development through science and technology applications. AUST is an independent, not for Profit University with a transparent governance system whose parent NMI is a private charity incorporated in the USA. The AUST has developed extensive links with the African scientific Diaspora and is able to count on a substantial pool of scientists and engineers teaching and conducting research in the best universities across the world. Strong partnerships have already been established with the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town (RSA) and with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT) and with the AIST affiliate center – the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). AUST will start its first academic year in July 2008 in its Abuja campus grounds, and will offer initially two Post-graduates programs of 2-year duration leading to the AUST Post-graduate Diploma (PGD) after one year and a Master of Science degree (MSc) at the end of the second year. The PGD will be awarded to qualified students who will have passed the prescribed courses and the MSc after submission and approval of a thesis/project.The second program in Engineering Science will be housed at the Gulf of Guinea Institute, AUST’s affliated oil and gas institute. AUST intends to develop its own PhD program in the coming years, and also establish strong partnerships with top flight universities, allowing doctoral students to do part of their work abroad.
