In General, Mekelle University aspires to be one of the leading higher institutions of teaching and learning in Ethiopia and to continually improve the reliablity and quality of education, research and consultancy services, to meet the needs of the country and the society:
Specifically, the University's mission is to:
* Provide high-quality undergraduate as well as post graduate programs in the agricultural, natural resource and environmental, engineering and technological, medical, geological, pure and applied sciences, and business and art fields, with emphasis upon those of special benefit to the country, its citizens, and the world at large;
* Engage in research that can support the development endeavors of the country, and artistic and scholarly activities that advance learning through the extension of the frontiers of knowledge and creative endeavor;
* Cooperate with industrial and governmental institutions to transfer knowledge in science, technology, health care and development;
* Offer continuing education programs tailored to the personal enrichment, professional upgrading, and career advancement interests and needs of working age adults, thereby motivating, qualifying and stabilizing the human resource needs of the region and the country at large;
* Make the expertise of the University available to local communities and public agencies in ways that are consistent with teaching and research functions and contribute to social, intellectual, technocratic, and economic development of the country ,the region and the world;
* Develop scholarship, implement the principles of democracy both internally and externally, continue developing human and civil rights and strive for their realization, and promote the understanding of people's cultures and religions.
