Email The Regional Maritime University (RMU), Accra, Ghana, is an international tertiary institution. The RMU presently occupies the premises of the former Ghana Nautical College. On 1st October, 1982, the Government of Ghana promulgated the Regional Maritime Law 1982, which was followed by the signing of the instrument of transfer, handing over the College to the then Ministerial Conference of West and Central African States on Maritime Transport (MINCONMAR), now known as Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA), which negotiated for its regionalization. The University was then re-named The Regional Maritime Academy (RMA). The formal inauguration of the RMU took place on Thursday 26th May, 1983 with the following countries as founding members: Republics of Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Regionalization of the University was for cooperation, particularly with regard to the training of personnel to ensure the sustained growth and development of maritime industries in the sub-region and beyond. The University in Ghana serves the Anglophone countries while a sister Academy in La Cote D?Ivoire (Acadmie Regionale Des Sciences Et Techniques De la Mer ARSTM) serves the Francophone countries. The RMU is a branch of the World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden and an affiliate of the University of Ghana, Lego. The University also has working relations with other universities in the sub-region. The RMU has since December, 2004 been given Institutional Accreditation by the National Accreditation Board, Ghana. Dedicated to the consistent development of human capital in the maritime industry of the sub region and beyond, the University has produced highly skilled and competent sea-going personnel over the years.
