Freshers of the College of Agriculture Education of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have been advised not to buy any handout from lectures of the university.
They are equally not under any obligation to buy any books authored by their lectures if they would not need them.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof, Akwasi Asabere Ameyaw gave the advice during the 15th matriculation of the Mampong Ashanti campus of the University of Education.
The advice created mixed feelings and also attracted wild applause from some of the students as well as lecturers.
However, some fresh students who spoke to the Today newspaper after the ceremony said they would, with all due respect disrespect their VC for once, for their own good so far as they stay on the school’s campus. While another lecturer who refused to tell his name also said ‘we don’t care whether they will buy it or not, we shall see’.
Out of 848 applications received for various programs in Agricultural, Integrated Science and Environmental Health and Sanitation Education, 628 were admitted, with 88 being females.
Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw noted that the female enrolment represented 3.7 percent increase of that of last academic year, showing the university’s desire to consistently and systematically increase the number of female students in their programs.
He also noted that the university was ‘admitting the first batch of 131 students into its Bachelors Program in Environmental Health and Sanitation. This group of students, he noted is expected to acquire the necessary skills and competencies to solve the problems of sanitation and waste management in this country.
The UCEW Vice Chancellor reminded the students that they had the right to protection through fair procedures, and against arbitrary and capricious academic evaluations. However adding that by the culture of the university, they are expected to express their sentiments in a reasonable and courteous manner.
