The Vice President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) says the Eastern Regional Director of Education has informed him that she intends dismissing some teachers of the Aburi Girls Senior High School following a series of fracas between them and the Headmistress.
Mr. Eric Angel Cabonu told Citi News the Regional Director, Renee Boakye Boateng appeared determined about the dismissal when the two had a telephone conversation over a recent disagreement that transpired between a teacher and the Headmistress of the school, Sylvia Asempa.
NAGRAT withdrew its services to the school after armed police officers stormed the school on the night of Friday January 7, with the aim of arresting the teacher who had apparently challenged the legitimacy of orders issued by the Headmistress who is supposed to have gone on retirement in December 2010.
It is not clear if the intended action of the Regional Education Director has the blessing of the headquarters of the Ghana Education Service or if she is acting arbitrarily.
But Mr. Cabonu warns of dire consequences for the school if the teachers are dismissed as threatened by the Regional Education Director. “We have information that the Regional Director is planning to dismiss the teachers from the school and as an Association we will not take that lightly. If that happens we are going to advise ourselves. She has not issued any reason as far as we are concerned. So we want to put into the public domain that if any of our members is dismissed from the school, NAGRAT will advise itself” he said.
“I wouldn’t know where the order is coming from but she says she is the Regional Director and that she is moving the teachers from the school. I spoke to her and that is what she told me with no reasons. She didn’t tell me the exact number but what I got from my intelligence is that seven teachers will be affected. If it happens, NAGRAT will take very serious action. We will go to the fullest extent” he warned.
