National Service Boss, Vincent Kuagbenu is suggesting an end to the use of teachers for national assignments such as national censuses, elections, national registration exercises among others.
He says the use of teachers for such programmes tremendously affects teaching and learning in schools particularly at the primary and JHS levels.
He says national service personnel should rather be used for such exercises.
Some teachers were used for the 2010 population and Housing Census and have also been used in the past for voters’ registration exercises by the Electoral Commission and other State agencies.
Mr. Kuagbenu told Citi News the situation must change.
“We think that the National Service is also established for programmes such as that. And we are prepared to work with State institutions provided they inform us early enough so we can factor their programmes into our programmes” he said.
Mr. Vincent Kuagbenu told Citi News that, six months before the 2010 National Population and Housing Census, the NSS wrote to the Ghana Statistical Service informing them of their readiness to provide over 60,000 graduates for the exercise.
According to him, there was no positive response from the Ghana Statistical service.
“We need to look at these things and look at them dispassionately and see how best we can deploy out human resource properly” he said.
