Milk comes from two main sources, that is from humans (breast milk) and cows. But these two milk forms are different in nutritional value as human milk contains a greater amount of carbohydrate than cow milk, it contains less amount of protein compared to cow milk and almost the same amount of fat as cow milk.
Types of cow milk
1. Dried powdered milk
(a) Skimmed milk
(b) Full cream milk
This is milk from which water has been removed. It is sterilised, dried and kept in a light container. It is easy to prepare, keep, for travelling and very useful in remote areas. But it taste a bit different from fresh milk and some of the nutrients like vitamin c is lost.
2. Evaporated milk
This is milk with about half the amount of water removed. It is easily digestible, but cannot keep as powdered milk. Before opening the tin the top must first be washed. The milk is diluted with two parts of water to one part of milk, and then sugar is added. Evaporated milk is bulky for storage and more expensive than the dried milk.
3. Condensed milk
4. Fresh milk
Human Milk
Bottle feeding with this kind of milk is not recommended as the source of infection is great, thus this milk should be fed straight into the baby’s mouth. Care should be taken whiles feeding the baby as they could be fed leading to vomiting, sore buttocks and babies stool looses its greenish colour due to indigestion.
