Derek Abrefa of the Ghana Immigration Service on Saturday won the first ever Mallas Table Tennis Open Championship played at the Seven Great Academy School at Dansoman. The national star who is gearing to face the best stars in the world beat Kwame Ampofo Addo at the grand final of the exciting tournament which was sponsored by Samuel Dei, a former tennis star in Cuba. In the ladies final, Philia Baah Danso beat Beatrice Gyasi of the Ghana Police Service, with Akosua Ketu, also a national star placing third. All the national team players with the exception of Beatrice Borquaye who recently won the National Open Championship sponsored by the chairman of the Ghana Table Tennis Association was not available because she was not released by the Ghana Navy. However, coach Robert Amartey of the Mallas Tennis Club said the exposure gained from the event would help other players to catch up and build the interest of the game in the youth. He said the tournament was to propagate the message of table4 tennis in Dansoman and surrounding areas like Mamprobi, Korle Gonno and James Town. Samuel Dei told The Statesports in an exclusive interview that the Championship would be held every quarterly to keep the youth who love table tennis very busy. He called on individuals and companies to support sports as it can take the nation far.
