One of the most quintessential ‘Old School’ jams on radio which caught on furiously with everyone, was the ‘Weekend Groove’ on Atlantis 87.9fm hosted by DJ Blow, who calls himself “The Next Big Thing”. Before it went off air, the show was on Atlantis Radio for three years without a break. Bruce is pleased to be spending time with his young family now that the show is off air. As for his show, ‘Weekend Groove’, he believes it’s time for repackaging, and with the offers coming in since news of his split with Atlantis broke, it won’t be long before his ‘Old School’ jams hit another station. For over three years, many were those who tuned in to a musical journey that sent one to the 80s and 90s, after a hectic week, and a usually tiresome Saturday afternoon. Sometimes it threw one as far back as the 70s, spinning some real disco numbers as well as rare grooves that brought about some good reminisces. Created by Blow, whose real name is William Nanka Bruce, the show was quite invigorating and showed Bruce’s dexterity as a DJ. He played according to pace and era, and injected some wry humour which went down well with both the young and middle aged audience it attracted. A tribute segment which invited listeners to send in dedications always saw an influx of messages, and praises eulogizing Bruce, which illustrated the show’s popularity. That notwithstanding, Bruce, who has since the onset discharged his duties with utmost professionalism, had to take the show off Atlantis in a manner which suggested some acrimony with the station’s owner Mr James Appiah. But Bruce would not be drawn into confirming or denying that his resignation from Atlantis was as a result of a strain in his relationship with Appiah. Bruce began his radio career as one of the pioneer DJs with George Brun and Giles Bossman at Groove FM back in the days. Currently, he is an entrepreneur who runs his own ironmongery business called Iron Age, manufacturing and supplying custom-made burglar proofing and furniture in wrought iron. Growing up as a teenager in the 1980s, Bruce did the rounds at all hip clubs of the time; ‘Babylon’, ‘Keteke’, ‘Cave du Roi’, ‘Black Ceaser’s Palace’, ‘Stallion’, ‘Maharani’, and was a regular at all the fun fairs at Christ the King School, and ATTC. An old student of Presbyterian Boys Secondary (Presec) at Legon, Bruce has always loved music and been a keen collector of records, and lately CDs, which explains his huge repertoire of varied sound. Married with two children, Nicole and Michelle, the DJ comes from the distinguished Nanka-Bruce family of the Gas. His grandfather was Dr. Nanka-Bruce of blessed memory. He cites his wife, Akua and mother as his two favourite people, adding that he has great respect for both of them.
