Former Ghana international, Sam Johnson has called it a day after twenty years of top level professional football. Sam Johnson, who came to national prominence in the early 90s told local sports paper, the Graphic Sports that “the limbs cannot carry me any further and I have to accept that”. “There comes a time to call it a day and I think this is the time,” he added. The 34-year old former Hearts of Oak defender, who won 45 caps for Ghana in several positions across the field was renowned for his abundant energy and effort in a Ghana shirt but he also gained respect in Ghana football circles for the sheer number of years he kept going in professional football. Johnson made his name with Accra Hearts of Oak between 1991-1995 on the local scene before heading for a career in Europe. There he played for Kalamata in Greece, Anderlecht of Belgium before settling down in Turkey in 1998 where he played for Gazientespor, Fernebahce and Kayserispor. On the international scene, he made his debut for Ghana in the qualifiers for the 1992 Nations Cup qualifiers before going on to play at the 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000 Nations Cup.
