THE NATIONAL Sports Council (NSC) yesterday met with leadership of the various supporters’ unions in the country, market women and other bodies to find ways of organizing massive support for the national female soccer team, the Black Queens in the forthcoming African Women qualifier to be played at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra on Saturday March 8, 2008. Speaking to journalists at the Press Conference Hall of the Ohene Djan Stadium, Prince Oduro-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NSC appealed to the public to give the Queens as much support as they do the Black Stars. “I always feel bad the way we support the Black Queens who have been to the World Cup three times and yet the squad does not get the support it deserves,” he stated. Mr. Oduro-Mensah, who was flanked by his deputy, James Charles Aryeh and Sam Amankwah, the Regional Officer of the NSC, said there was the need to fashion out ideas on how to forge ahead with the ladies team, which he believed could one day win the World Cup. “It is important for us to support the women in all aspects because during the just-ended Nations Cup, people were purchasing Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari jerseys; it is time to do the same now with Adjoa Bayor, Sheila Okine and Florence Okoe who are also soccer stars in Ghana,” he noted. The NSC CEO said after listening to various suggestions from supporters and sister stakeholders, his outfit had pegged the gate fees for the Saturday Queens match at GH¢1 (One Ghana Cedis). According to him, information vans would be in town today to create the necessary awareness for the Black Queens/ Mama Elephants match on Saturday at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, and from Friday the tickets for the game will be on sale at the NSC office.
