In a world often enamoured with wealth and power, few individuals embody the true essence of greatness like Julius Debrah. As I stumbled upon a YouTube video dubbed ‘’Julius Debrah- in the Eyes of the Fourth Estate’’ celebrating his 58th birthday on April 25th, 2024, I found myself captivated by the heartfelt compliments from seasoned media personalities across the ideological spectrum. Their words painted a portrait of a man whose life epitomized humility, generosity, thoughtfulness, and love. I am inspired and compelled to reflect on my friendship with him and his remarkable life journey, one that exemplifies the timeless adage: "All that glitters is gold."

My acquaintance with Julius began during our years at University of Ghana, Legon, although we didn't become close until 2007. While pursuing a combined major in Political Science and Archaeology, I shared Archaeology classes with him, affectionately dubbing ourselves "Archaeo Mates." Despite his status as a self-made businessman and Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Julius exuded genuine warmth and kindness that drew both students and lecturers to him effortlessly. His humility never waned, despite his age and achievements, leaving an enduring impression on those around him.

Curious about Julius's decision to pursue a bachelor's degree despite his success, I once mustered the courage to inquire. His response was enlightening—he recounted how top NDC officials in the Eastern region would often attempt to "bully" him with their university degrees, reminiscing about their time, especially, at University of Ghana, Legon. Wanting to claim his own "bragging rights" from his university experience, Julius saw value in obtaining a degree beyond his accomplishments. His decision to pursue a bachelor's degree, despite his success, spoke volumes about his unwavering commitment to personal growth and the pursuit of knowledge.

Our friendship flourished to the extent that I would stay at his house before traveling to Kumasi after vacations. Despite my political differences as a vocal critic of the NDC, Julius never let it come between us but welcomed me as a friend and nephew without reservation. I vividly recall an incident in 2008, during election season, when I campaigned fervently for Nana Akufo-Addo while staying at his house. After indulging in a hearty meal of Fufu at his house, Julius approached me with news of an impending visit from Baba Jamal and other top NDC officials from the Eastern Region. Sensing that discussions would likely revolve around the performance of the Kuffour government, Julius advised me to "behave" during their visit, knowing my inclination to challenge their criticisms. As they engaged in animated discussions, criticizing the NPP from all angles, I eavesdropped from a distance. Julius couldn't help but laugh hysterically at my predicament once the NDC officers departed. His ability to bridge political divides with grace and humour is a testament to his remarkable character.

Julius Debrah worked very hard for the NDC as a party in opposition, so it came as no surprise to me when President Mills appointed him as the Director of the Ghana Tourist Board in 2009. With his background in archaeology, I was confident in his ability to excel in that role. His substantial contributions to the tourism sector are widely recognized, notably his role in transforming the Ghana Tourist Board into the Ghana Tourism Authority, thus amplifying its effectiveness in promoting tourism in the country. Throughout his political career, he has remained steadfast in his commitment to serving others. From his appointment in 2013 by President John Mahama as Eastern Regional Minister and later, Minister for Local Government, he dedicated himself to improving the lives of ordinary citizens which earned him widespread admiration. But it was his appointment as Chief of Staff to President John Mahama that truly showcased his leadership prowess. In his role as Chief of Staff, he navigated the complexities of governance with grace and integrity. Despite the immense power vested in him, he never lost sight of his core values – always putting the needs of the people above his own. His approachability and genuine concern for the welfare of others endeared him to colleagues and constituents alike, earning him the reputation of a true statesman.

Beyond his political and business achievements, it is his character that truly sets him apart. His life journey reminds us that true gold resides in the depths of our character – in our capacity to love, to give, and to uplift others. His genuine concerns for others have left an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege of knowing him. Despite the lure of power and prestige, he never loses sight of his core values. Whether it's lending a helping hand to those in need or offering words of wisdom to those facing challenges, he exemplifies the virtues of compassion and empathy.

On a lighter side, it's regrettable that Julius refrained from contesting for the NDC's Flagbearer position out of deference to John Mahama. Personally, I have no doubt that Dr. Bawumia will emerge victorious in the upcoming election. However, had it not been for John Mahama's greed, Julius Debrah could have potentially bolstered his already impressive list of accolades by adding "Former Presidential Candidate" to his repertoire. LOL.

On his 58th birthday, we celebrate Julius not for his wealth or power, but for the profound impact he has had on the lives of those around him. His legacy serves as a powerful reminder that true greatness lies not in material possessions, but in the relationships we cultivate and the lives we touch along the way. Indeed, he is a proper human being.

Please, join me in celebrating the life of a remarkable friend and uncle, whose heart of gold continues to illuminate the world around him. As we honour Julius's remarkable journey, let us take inspiration from his example and strive to emulate his compassion, empathy, and unwavering commitment to serving others. Julius, may your light continue to shine brightly, illuminating the world with your heart of gold. Indeed, all that glitters around Julius is pure gold.

Happy birthday, dear friend and Archaeo Mate.
