The opposition New Patriotic Party says it will take disciplinary action against Asokwa MP, Maxwell Kofi Jumah for his unsavory comments made against former Kumasi mayor.
The MP last week alleged on a Kumasi based radio station that Madam Patricia Apiegyei contender for his seat and former Mayor of Kumasi under the Kufuor administration only got her position by offering sexual favours.
His comments have drawn widespread condemnation from members of his party and a cross section of the public. Mr Kofi Jumah later apologized, saying his comments were misconstrued. Despite his apology, a group calling themselves concerned citizens in Kumasi on Tuesday, November 16, demonstrated against the Asokwa MP over the comments he made last week.
A former Assembly member for the Atonsu electoral area within Asokwa, Nana Adakwa Yiadom, who led the demonstration, in an interview with Citi News, said the protest was in abhorrence of foul language in the nation’s political discourse.
He added that they as concerned members of the NPP want Maxwell Kofi Jumah punished for passing such comments.
“We want Kofi Jumah to be disciplined, infact he is not qualified to be a leader neither a politician within the Asokwa Constituency the filthy words he uses to abuse our women and inhabitants within the constituency is the reason why we are demonstrating”.
Speaking on the Citi Eyewitness News, on Tuesday, the General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John said Maxwell Kofi Jumah has been dragged to the disciplinary committee of the NPP to explain his unpleasant comments.
He told Citi News that MP from Obuasi, Edward Ennin and NPP Director of Communication Kwaku Kwarteng have also been hauled before the party's disciplinary committee to explain their loose talk.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie added that Kofi Jumah’s apology notwithstanding the “party will not allow individual utterances to derail the peace and stability in the NPP”.
He also cautioned that the party will not allow any untoward behavior from any member of the party. “We want to make it very clear that nobody should make a mistake in assuming that they are bigger than the party and that they can get away with such statements, we will not allow that and we will ensure that discipline is at the heart of the party”.
