President John Evans Atta Mills and his Nigerian counterpart Goodluck Jonathan have underscored the need for free trade to be enhanced within the West African Sub-region. The two Presidents stated this when they briefed press men on the various discussions they had before the Nigerian President emplaned to Nigeria. President Goodluck Jonathan was in the country for a two day state visit which saw him hold bilateral talks with President Mills and also awarded with an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). The two Presidents also jointly cut the sod for the construction of an ultra-modern library complex at GIMPA. The construction of the library will cost $ 8. 5m. President Mills on behalf of the government of Ghana pledged to support the project with GHC 2m while fifteen Nigerian companies also pledged $ 1m. Briefing press men at the Kotoka International Airport, the two Presidents indicated that enhancing free trade would bring enormous benefits West African would sub region. They bemoaned the fact that although the ECOWAS protocol on free trade and movement of people is in force its adherence by member countries lives much to be desired. Presidents John Mills and Goodluck Jonathan indicated that there is greater collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria to ensure that enhancing free trade within West Africa becomes a reality. Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that his visit to the country was most beneficial looking at the outcome of the issues he discussed with President Mills. He explained that there is a renewed commitment between the two countries to push the agenda of ECOWAS forward as it has been in the past.
