Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer, Professor John Evans Atta Mills of being jealous of him for the enormous support he continues to enjoy from the former NPP presidential aspirants. He said ever since he was elected flag bearer of the party, all his former competitors had supported and accompanied him to all the regions he visited to thank delegates for giving him the mandate to lead the party to the forthcoming general elections, contending that Prof. Mills was envious of the unity among members of the NPP. Nana Akufo-Addo was addressing the Greater Accra Regional delegates at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra on Sunday, the last lap of his regional tours, to thank delegates for their support and confidence reposed in him. He was accompanied by all the former aspirants except Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama and Arthur Kennedy. The General Secretary of the party, Nana Ohene Ntow, other top party officials and some ministers of state were also at the function. Nana Akufo-Addo observed that the NDC flag bearer was not enjoying the support of his former competitors in his door-to-door campaign, saying Mills had been left to fight his own fight and was therefore doing everything possible to taint the image of the NPP. He noted that NPP had proved its detractors and skeptics wrong by showing maturity and democracy at its congress, contrary to speculations that the party would disintegrate after the congress. He stated that the large number of contestants who went into the presidential contest had rather become a blessing in disguise for the party as they had all united and rallied behind him to the admiration of all, especially opponents of the party. The former Foreign Affairs Minister promised to ensure, when elected president, that there was cordial relationship between the party and government, noting that the dichotomy that existed between the two entities would no longer exist. The flag bearer observed that President John Agyekum Kufuor had laid a solid foundation for the development of the country, saying his government would build on that solid foundation. Nana Akufo-Addo urged party members and all Ghanaians who have attained 18 years and above to register or update their electoral records when the voters’ register is opened in March this year. The 13 contestants took turns to pledge their unflinching support for Nana Akufo-Addo to retain power for the NPP. As usual, Sheikh I.C. Quaye was on board to add some dosage of comic relief to spice up the political talks.
