There was marginal reduction in motor accidents in the Asante-Mampong Municipality during the year, according to statistics provided by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Edward Oduro-Kwateng, Divisional Commander. The total number of car crashes between January and December was 87 as against 100 in 2009. Fatalities were, however, on the higher side, outstripping that of the previous year. ACP Oduro-Kwateng said 19 people were killed while 181 passengers suffered various degrees of injury in 2010. In 2009, road accidents claimed 13 lives and left 163 others injured. The Divisional Commander said the intensive road safety education mounted by the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit of the Ghana Police Service and stakeholders was beginning to pay off. ACP Oduro-Kwateng said during the year, the division recorded three robbery cases, four murders, five defilement, 13 abductions and 351 cases of stealing. He said the police were determined to rid the area of miscreants for the law-abiding citizens to live in peace. In line with the objective the police have stepped up day and night patrols to provide adequate security for the people. He appealed to the residents to help in the fight against crime by providing the police with reliable information.
