Information reaching the Daily Guide newspaper indicates that although the population and housing census has started in earnest nationwide, there is little publicity about it in the Brong Ahafo region.
Daily Guide’s checks from the various districts and municipalities in the region show that people know little or nothing about the census.
When Saily Guide visited some home in the Sunyani municipality, a lot of the adult population from the ages of 45 and above seemed not to know anything about the census exercise.
One aged women, Juliana Yeboah, a retired educationist who was so furious insulting some enumerators, told Daily Guide that the enumerators came to her house knocking so hard at her door, waking her up from her sleep only to be told they wanted to count her.
“I told them to go and come back again another time since I don’t know anything about the census exercise and they got angry so I locked them out,” she retorted.
This has made the work of the enumerators difficult in the region because people find it difficult letting them into their houses.
Daily guide’s checks from Dormaa Ahenkro show that the people there are not aware of the census exercise and the questionnaires for the programme did not arrive early.
According to one of the enumerators in the Sunyani Municipality, Francis Yeboah, their work in the municipality had been very difficult since they started the census. He blamed it on the low publicity since most people seemed not to know anything about what was going on in the country.
At Ntoroso, Kenyase, Adantia and other places, people said they had not seen anyone or heard of the census. Some even said they did not know anything called census.When Daily Guide also went round to check whether all the houses had been marked for the exercise in the municipality, it found out that only a few had been marked.
