Consultant Recommends Upgrading Prempeh College Into A University Website
Mr Oduro Kwarteng, a Development Consultant and an old student of Prempeh College in Kumasi, has advocated for the setting up of a foundation to facilitate the establishment of the school into the Prempeh University of Science and Technology. He suggested the setting-up of a task force to plan and work-out modalities for the launching of the University within five years, to fulfill the vision of the founding fathers. Mr Oduro Kwarteng was speaking at the Colleges annual Founding Fathers and Pioneer Students Day in Kumasi on Saturday, under the theme “Appreciating that Great Vision of Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II”. Initiated by Dr Emmanuel Osei Kuffour, the National President of Prempeh College Old Student’s Association (Amanfoo) last year, the day was to afford the old students and the entire Prempeh College family the opportunity to give serious recognition, heart felt appreciation and gratitude to the Founders and Pioneer students of the institution. The occasion is also to recognize the pivotal roles played by the first batch of 50 students, who in 1949, laid a solid foundation through tremendous will-power, sacrifice and unparallel discipline, which has raised an enviable academic standard and discipline in the school. Dr. Osei Kuffour said Prempeh College was founded by Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, late Asantehene, Asanteman Council and the British colonial government headed by Major Charles Owen Butler, the Ashanti Chief Commissioner in 1947, with the aim to offer quality education to the Northern Territories. Paying tributes to the founders fathers, Dr. Osei Kuffour said, the Association was appreciative of the collaborative roles play by the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, which he said laid a solid foundation for the college. Madame Patricia Appiagyei, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive addressing the gathering entreated Old Students Associations in the country to give meaningful support to the New Educational Reform programme, which she explained, was aimed at correcting anomalies detected in the old educational system. She commended the Founding Fathers and the Pioneers students for their toil and sacrifice, whiles admonishing the present crop of students and staff to work assiduously to maintain the high level of academic and moral standards set by the Pioneers. Mrs. Belinda Serwaa Addo, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, who presided, lauded the effort of the Founders and old students and gave the assurance that the Directorate would mobilize every available resource to promote the successful implementation of the New Educational Reform in the region.
