The Police at Nkwanta in the Volta Region have arrested a 32-year-old fisherman, Papa Agbavor, for allegedly defiling and impregnating a 13-year-old class two girl at Bulame, near Kabiti in the Nkwanta District. Mr David Sekyere Bruku, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in charge of Nkwanta district told the Ghana News Agency that Agbavor committed the act in April this year, when he went to the girl's house under the pretext of greeting her parents when he knew everybody had left for the market except the girl. "Agbavor took advantage of the situation and defiled the young girl," DSP Bruku said, adding that after the act, he gave the girl GH¢1.00 (10,000 cedis). Agbavor also threatened the girl with death should she tell anyone about what happened. He said Agbavor continued to have sex with the girl in the parents' house on market days. DSP Bruku said the girl later mustered courage and informed the mother about her ordeal but unfortunately the mother died few days after. He said the act remained unknown to other family members of the girl until she became sick and was diagnosed at the local hospital of being 10 weeks pregnant. DSP Bruku said preliminary investigations had been completed and that Agbavor would soon be put before court.
