Akropong, Nov. 5, GNA - The Progress Foundation Ghana, a non- governmental organization (NGO), donated items worth 8,000 GH cedis to the Akropong School for the Blind on Wednesday. The items included Braille writing papers, two Braille photocopier machines, two computers and accessories, two speech typewriters and two telex machines. Making the donation the Life Patron of the organization Mr Dan Botwe, a presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the donation was part of his commitment to the school after a visit with a friend, resident in Netherlands. He stressed the need for special attention to be given to children with disabilities so that their God given talents would be shaped for the benefit of society. Mr Botwe, who was touched by hearing that the school faced water problems, personally donated 11 million cedis cash for the purchase of two giant polytanks. He expressed concern about the neglect of children with disabilities by their families and called on society to create the enabling environment for such children. Mr Botwe said many disabled people had contributed to the socio-economic development of the country since independence and there was the need to give them support to develop their God- given talents and skills. "It is when we are able to help them to develop themselves that they will not go on the streets begging for their daily bread.' he said. The Akuapem North District Chief Executive, Mr Edward Adu-Aboagye, expressed gratitude for the donation and said the school scored 100 percent in the 2007 BECE. The headmaster of the school Mr J. S Annor thanked the organization and Mr Botwe for the donation.
