…To publicly explain health statusThe First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembele, Hon. Freddie Worsemao Armah Blay, has thrown an open challenge to Professor John Evans Atta Mills and his doctors to come clean on the presidential candidate’s health status. To him so long as the issue of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate remains a secret, it would provide an avenue for the media to speculate. For him, nobody can prevent the press and others from commenting on the health status of Prof. Mills, adding that whoever wants to gag people, must be living in the Middle Ages. “The reality is that, the man is not well. Let us not hide that fact. People should not pretend and behave as if nothing is happening, and since the man is aspiring to lead this country, his health status must not be kept secret,” he told this paper in an interview. Freddy Blay, who was reluctant to comment on the issue, taking into consideration the fact that his own paper, ‘Daily Guide’, was attacked for publishing issues concerning Prof. Mills’ health, said in his view, members and aides of the law professor should have an effective way of dealing with the issue, instead of trying to gag people. “They should find an effective way of handling or reacting to this matter. They cannot prevent people from talking about this matter. I know Prof. Mills very well. He was my lecturer and he has no problem at all, but as far as his health issues remain secret, people would speculate and others would feed on the speculation.” The Ellembelle legislator maintained that though nobody is a superman, it was his humble submission that the doctors of Prof. Mills come out, and state the actual status of the candidate to end the conundrum. He believes that the health status of anybody who seeks the high office of the land must be of major concern to the public and the nation at large. Mr. Blay, therefore, stressed that it would be unfortunate if such vital information was swept under the carpet. The first Deputy Speaker gave reference to other presidents, across the globe, whose sicknesses became topical. “When somebody is aspiring to be the head of state, his health conditions must not be kept secret. When Fidel Castro was sick, it became topical in America, and if President Bush falls sick, it would be a major issue, so it is important that we all know the health status of Prof. Mills,” he said. But Prof. Mills, who has suspended his political activities in support of the national team, the Black Stars, and subsequently left the shores of Ghana for South Africa, takes strong reservations about the manner in which sections of the media have sought to make mountains out of mole hills, on his health status. The former Vice President took time to rebut the report, on his health status on various radio stations, since according to him, he was strong and as fit as fiddle, and would give the NPP a run for their money, come December. “I have enough strength and determination to go through the elections,” he told various radio stations, and was quick to add that there was nothing unusual about his trip to South Africa. Prof. Mills expressed concern over his inability to visit hospital in Ghana, because anytime he did, that the media created the impression that he was bed-ridden. “I cannot go to a dentist in Ghana without it being misinterpreted,” he lamented. According to him, anybody who is sick cannot embark upon house-to-house campaign for six hours a day, and wondered why sections of the media wanted to be mischievous.
