The Minister of Communications, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paul Tawiah Quaye to sit up and clamp down on high way robbers. Ghanaians were in shock when it was reported that armed robbers had forced passengers aboard a Tamale-bound bus from Accra - including a father who was ordered to break the virginity of his 14-year-old daughter - to have sex with female passengers after robbing them of their belongings. Mr Haruna Iddrisu, who was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Thursday, was shocked at the callousness exhibited by the robbers, and was particularly incensed at the way the robbers maltreated the father and his daughter, saying they would suffer ‘what we call cognitive dissonance’ and that it would be difficult for them to acclimatize with the situation. He accused the Police of being more interested in the trifle they take from vehicle owners rather than dealing with issue to which they have a duty, hence, his advised the IGP to call his men to order and ensure they discharge their duties as expected of them. "Instead of [the police] concentrating on these patrols, sometimes they are more interested in pittance that they take from these vehicles by way of extortion...and not deal with the issue to which they have a duty and a standard of care to the Ghanaian people, so I think that the IGP must sit up", the minister lamented. Mr. Iddrisu charged the Police to improve upon patrols on roads that are noted for criminal activities, urging that the force should do everything within their means to bring the robbers to book and to ensure that such regrettable incidents do not recur. The Communications Minister also called on the government to immediately resource the Police Service adequately so they liase with the transport institutions to clamp down on criminals.
