Knights Of Marshall Call On EC To Conduct Credible Elections Website
The Supreme Council of the Noble Order of the Knights of Marshall, a Catholic fraternity on Thursday called on the Electoral Commission to conduct credible, fair and honest elections whose results would be accepted by all Ghanaians. “In a region, indeed a continent of turbulent upheavals, it is important for all to work to preserve peace, unity and tranquility of our country as a safe haven. We caution that the record of earlier elections held in Ghana since 1992 will be the standard for measuring the 2008 elections”. This was contained in a six-point communiqué issued in Accra at the end of the fraternity’s Semi-Annual Meeting held at Sekondi in the Western Region. The fraternity also called on all political parties to conduct their campaigns with “complete decorum, respect for each other and educate their members and supporters to see those from opposing parties not as enemies but fellow brothers and sisters competing healthily for the privilege to manage the affairs of the nation”. “We realize the need for the peace that we enjoy not to be taken for granted and in which regard we pray for complete tolerance of one another, no matter our diverse backgrounds, religious persuasions and political affiliations. “It is our fervent hope that at the end of the elections, all parties will accept in good faith the results as the verdict of the people and the will of God”, the communiqué said. It also congratulated the Black Stars for their splendid performance during the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, expressing the hope that the unity that their performance engendered in the nation would endure “for us to always have a united Ghana”.
