Kufuor Meets Alan Kyerematen And Akufo-Addo Website
The President, John Agyekum Kufuor has met the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyerematen at the Castle, Osu, Friday April 25, 2008 in attempts to resolve Alan's resignation issues. According to a Press Release signed by the President’s Secretary, Mr. D. K. Osei, the meeting which lasted for three hours was to try and iron out issues leading to Alan’s resignation from the NPP. The statement said the President has empanelled a committee to investigate all the allegations made by Mr. Kyerematen, concerns which led to his resignation from the party last week. It also warned that party members should desist from making statements that would inflame passions. Mr. Alan Kyerematen, the runner-up in the elections for the party’s presidential candidate resigned from the party last Thursday April 17, 2008 citing the intimidation and alienation of his supporters as the reasons. After his resignation, efforts were made by the party hierarchy to resolve the issues to pave the way for his return to the party. But as news about discussions of his possible return to the party was making the rounds, he issued a statement in which he categorically said that his resignation was final and he was not returning to the party. Alan’s statement said in part, “I wish to state categorically that I have not rescinded my decision to resign from the party.” He also said it appears that there is a calculated attempt engineered from certain quarters to create public disaffection for him, and stated that while it is true that no single individual is more important than the party to which he belongs, it is equally true that national interest is superior to the interest of any single party. Earlier today, Mr. B. J. da Rocha, a founding member of the NPP called Alan’s bluff and said he could leave the party. He said Mr. Kyerematen had no deep rooted commitment and loyalty to the NPP. In a statement, Mr da Rocha said he was compelled to go public because of Mr. Kyerematen’s press statement during ongoing negotiations. "Frankly I did not expect the statement that came yesterday to come yesterday", he said. The NPP elder and other party leaders had been trying to persuade the former Trade and Industry Minister to rescind his decision to quit the party. The president's move is in sharp contrast with that of Mr. B. J. da Rocha, who says Alan can go. It is however, yet to be seen whether this rather belated attempt by the president, would be enough to get Alan Kyerematen to rescind his decision and return to the NPP
