An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 25-year-old taxi driver, Kofi Tongo to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.Evans Danyo 16, a student jointly charged with Tongo was sent to the juvenile court for sentence. They were sentenced on their own plea.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) E.S.S. Koranteng, prosecuting told the court presided over by Mr E. Kyei-Baffour that during the afternoon of January 10, 2011 personnel of the Narcotic Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters acting upon information went to an uncompleted building near the new Achimota Lorry Station and arrested the accused person and a search on him revealed 13 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp.
He said upon interrogation, Danyo claim ownership and stated that it was given to him by Tongo to sell and led the police to a spot where Tongo was seen busily working on a quantity of the drugs in a tray.
ASP Koranteng said Tongo was arrested and admitted having engaged Danyo to sell the drugs.
He said during investigations the Police realised that Danyo came to Accra from Adeiso in the Eastern Region without the knowledge of his parents due to lack of parental care and engaged by Tongo into dealing in narcotic drugs but never paid him apart from feeding.
