Moderate Quake Hits Eastern Indonesia Website
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 rocked eastern parts of Indonesia on Wednesday afternoon, no report of damage or casualties, the meteorological agency said here. The quake struck at 19:48 Jakarta time (1248 GMT) with epicenter at 176 kilometers southeast Bitung town of North Sulawesi province and at 10 kilometers in depth, an official of the agency said. In 2004, over 160,000 people were killed in Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated the coastal areas of the province and other countries in southeast Asia. Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates meet causing frequent volcanic movements.
