Nii Okwei Kinka Dowouna IV, the Osu Mantse, has launched a development initiative to improve the lives of Osu people. The initiative, dubbed the "Osu Mantse Community Development Initiative" would cover agriculture, sanitation and maternal and infant mortality. The fund would be resourced from government, embassies and business entities operating in Osu. It would help provide equipment for fishermen at subsidized prices, register babies in Osu to monitor their growth and educating nurses and midwives on safe motherhood among other things. Launching the initiative on Wednesday Nii Dowouna urged his people to burry their differences and take steps that would move Osu forward. He expressed regret about the high rate of maternal mortality in the country and called for measures to curb it. He expressed the desire to convert all the public toilets in Osu into water closets to meet modern standards. Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, the Mayor of Accra, praised the people of Osu for putting their differences behind them for development and for peace to prevail in the area. He appealed to the chieftaincy institution to always play a leading role in the provision of development projects in their areas of jurisdiction and not rely on government for all their needs. Dr Vanderpuije appealed to all communities in the city to help the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in its quest to uplift the status of Accra. Dr Vanderpiuje said AMA had initiated a project dubbed "Giving the Child a Chance" aimed at ensuring safe delivery of babies in the Metropolis. "Very often, when problems crop up during delivery, saving the mother becomes the priority of the medics and so this initiative is to ensure that babies are also given equal chance of survival." Mr Vanderpuije appealed to the people to give priority to sanitation issues especially at the beaches since it could rake in a lot of income for Accra. He said the AMA was distributing litter bins to homes, ministries and corporate bodies in the metropolis and called for support.
