President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed gratitude to Ghanaians and the world at large for their goodwill and encouraging messages, after he was involved in a motor accident on Wednesday.
He escaped unhurt, the near-fatal accident on the Airport Road – 37 Hospital road late morning while on his way to the Castle, Osu for official duties.
A Benz saloon car is reported to have crashed into the President’s car, sending it summersaulting a couple of times before landing on its side with the President and his driver trapped in it.
President Kufuor was particularly grateful to a number of young men who he said readily came to his aid and assisted his security team to salvage the situation.
Family members, including his wife Madam Theresa Kufuor, Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, friends and close allies visited him at the Castle to sympathize with his predicament.
He later interacted with the Castle Press Corps.
Narrating what he saw of the accident, he said it was so sudden that it did not afford his driver, Emmanuel Osafo Addo, any room to react.
“All of a sudden I saw this vehicle coming at top speed on us but before the driver could do anything there was this big bang on us that sort of swung my vehicle to hit a curb at the left side and jumped the curb and hit two or more vehicles going the opposite direction. Before I knew, my car was on the side with the wheels up…”.
The President's driver and the driver of the other Benz car are on admission at the 37 Military Hospital.
President Kufuor assured that he was doing fine and felt no pains.
He was expected to leave Accra for Freetown, Sierra Leone on Thursday to attend the inauguration of President Ernest Bai Koromah, however Information Minister, Oboshie Sai Coffie told Joy News, the President may cancel the journey following advise that he took some rest.
