Railway Workers Reject Salary Arrears, Demand 150 Percent Pay Rise Website
The two-week strike in the railway sector is continuing to adversely affect businesses. That follows the failure of the management of the Ghana Railway Company to resolve the crisis that has hit the sector. Not even the intervention of the Ports, Harbours and Railway Minister, Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi could move the workers from their entrenched position. The striking workers are demanding a 150 per cent salary increase refusing to accept their two month's salary arrears which management was ready to pay. At a meeting between the workers and the Minister as well as the management of the company, the workers rejected management’s proposal to take their salary arrears and go back to work while efforts are made to improve their conditions of service. They say their demand for a salary increase must be met before they would reconsider their decision. The Managing Director of the Railways Company, Mr Rufus Quaye said the intervention of the Labour Commission will be sought. He said the Labour Law was being looked at in order to invoke the relevant provisions to try and get the workers back to work. He told Joy News that it was impossible to approve the demand for such salary increase for the workers while they refused to work. “Where is the money going to come from if they don’t work”?, he asked.
