Samartex Provides Placement For KNUST Students Website
Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Limited and the Faculty of Forest Resources Technology of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure the relevance of training and research to the requirements of stakeholders in the timber industry. Dr. Daniel E.K. Addo Siaw, Vice Dean of the Faculty signed on behalf of the Faculty whilst Mr. Samuel Afari-Dartey, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Affairs of Samartex, signed on behalf of the company. By the terms of the memorandum, Samartex will provide placement for a number of undergraduates from the faculty for industrial attachment for 16 weeks each year. The company would provide accommodation and pay monthly feeding allowance of GHC 50 each to the first batch of 20 students who shall start their practical training with the company in mid August. It is estimated that the company shall spend GHC 8,000 per year on their training. The students would also be required to conduct demand-driven research that would address some of the problems facing the company and the timber industry in general at the end of their training. Dr Siaw said the two bodies had realized that training institutions, especially those in the area of natural resources management, could not continue to train in isolation and expect their graduates to be of much relevance to the requirements of prospective employers. The two sides envisaged a long standing collaboration with the company and other similar industries in the country for mutual benefits and synergies.
