Tutors of the Winneba Senior High School have been commended for their students' excellent performance in the recent West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). As many as 1,112 students of the school who sat for the examination obtained As and Bs. Out of the 29 subjects registered, 24 candidates scored between 90 and 100 percent, with many of them capturing 7 As, 5 As and 4 As. Mrs Cecilia Kwakye-Cofie, Headmistress, attributed the school's remarkable achievement to the high sense of commitment, devotion to duty coupled with hard work and sacrifices from the teachers. According to Mrs Kwakye-Cofie, 92.9 percent of the candidates who took part in the examination successfully passed in six to eight subjects. She said the magic wand, which accounted for this achievements was that the tutors collectively decided to sacrifice their Christmas holidays to enable them to prepare the final year students adequately for the examinations. Mrs Kwakye-Cofie said the decision, which had proved useful, was endorsed and supported by both the management and the Board of Governors. The Headmistress expressed the hope that the practice would be maintained, adding that the outcome of last year's WASSCE examinations was a clear indication that the school would record more impressive examination results in the coming years. She said the methods and workable strategies adopted by the teachers, some of who held Masters Degrees, had effectively transformed the poor academic standards of the students who did not enter the school with good grades. Mrs Kwakye-Cofie commended the teachers for their excellent performance and advised them against complacency in order to maintain the confidence and trust of the students and their parents. She said besides several district and regional academic and sports competition awards, which the school won last year, a sizeable number of students from the school had gained admission into the various tertiary institutions to further their education. Mrs Kwakye-Cofie further announced that a science student of the school had won a United Colleges scholarship to study at the University of Wales in the United Kingdom (UK), after she had been selected as one of the five best students in the country after a keenly contested national examination. She paid tribute members of the Board of Directors under the effective leadership of Professor Kwesi Yankah of the University of Ghana, Legon, Housemasters, teachers and members of the Students Representative Council for helping to maintain a high sense of discipline among the students. The Headmistress expressed the hope that all stakeholders who contributed to achieve this laudable feat would sustain the tempo to make the school one of the best institutions in the country. She said the vision of the management was to build a world class second cycle institution capable of producing graduates with exceptional leadership qualities and innovative abilities to meet the increasing manpower requirements of the nation. Mrs Kwakye-Cofie extended special gratitude to individuals and organizations including, Professor Kwesi Yankah, Chairman of the Board of Governors for donating uniforms for the school's cadet and also sponsoring the 'Sound Mind In A Sound Body' award. She also commended Mr Kwesi Essel Koomson, Managing Director of Union Rural Bank, for donating GH¢1,000 (10 million cedis) towards the running of the school. Others who whose contributions was highly acknowledged by the authorities of the school included, the past students association, individual past students, the immediate-past and present students representative councils, Mr Samuel Danso, Managing Director of Sabadan Company Limited, Mr Yaw Gyedu Ankama, Mr Mettle Nunoo, Mr McCauley, and the VALCO Trust Fund.
