Thirty-Three level 100 and two level 400 students of the University of Education, Winneba have been dismissed by the authorities for playing various roles in perpetrating fraudulent admissions during the 2007/2005 academic year. Their names were however not disclosed for security reasons. One senior staff at the office of the Deputy Registrar and a lecturer whose names were also not mentioned have also been sacked for their involvement in the act. The Vice-chancellor of the University, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw announced this at the matriculation of students in the Southern Sector to begin a diploma in Basic Education Programme by distance at Winneba on Saturday. He said two students have also been suspended for forging the Deputy Registrar's signature in order to secure study leave from the Ghana Education Service (GES). Professor Asabere-Ameyaw said the University of Education, Winneba "prides itself as a Centre of excellence for teacher education and that its admission process is very rigorous and highly transparent". According to him the university seeks to recruit the best applicants among school leavers and all who seek quality education in their programmes. The VC, in this regard, assured the general public that the University was alert and would not countenance any unacceptable practices.
