Mr Alfred Vanderpuije, Accra Mayor, has called on landlords to provide toilet facilities in their houses before renting them out to tenants. He said provision of toilet facilities for every household, workplaces and communities in the Metropolis was important to enable people have access to good and quality sanitation to promote healthy living. Mr Vanderpuije made the call during a house-to house inspection exercise at Ablekuma South Sub-Metropolitan Area on Tuesday. The exercise was to ensure provision of good toilets and whether the landlords had registered with waste management contractors in the area. He explained that the tour was in addition to sensitise the residents on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) efforts to implement by-laws on the requisition by landlords to provide decent toilet facilities. Mr Vanderpuije said every house in the Metropolis was expected to have decent toilet facilities functioning by the end of September this year, therefore efforts were being made to support vulnerable residents in the society. “AMA is concerned about the health of the people and would endeavour to ensure development is brought to their doorsteps,” he added. The Accra Mayor expressed concern about sanitation in the Metropolis which should be improved towards the envisaged Millennium City. He announced that measures were being put in place to get rid of ‘the Lavender Hill’ near the Korle Lagoon before the end of 2011 to prevent its health implications on the residents. Mr Vanderpuije appealed to stakeholders on sanitation to assist the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies with ideas, knowledge and programmes to improve on sanitation in the country.
