Accra, Sept. 30, GNA - Western Union Company, a money transfer organisation, has donated 600 dual desks to six deprived basic schools in the country, as part of the launch of the 2010 National "Back to School Promotion".
The beneficiary schools include Daatano Methodist Primary and Pekyino Number 1 Primary Schools in the Ashanti Region; Nkwantanang D/A five and six Primary and Junior High School (JHS) and Zakari Kope Primary and JHS in the Greater Accra Region.
The rest are; Nyanfeku Ekroful Catholic JHS in the Central Region and Whindo M/A Primary School in the Western Region.
Each of the six schools is entitled to 100 desks.
Mr Ben Shamo, Business Manager, Retail Banking and Funds Transfer Services of The Trust Bank, said the initiative also formed part of Western Union Foundation's "Our World, Our Family" signature programme aimed at empowering individuals, families and communities through access to better education and economic opportunities.
He said Western Union, with its partners, had been working to support activities that would significantly increase the capacity of the beneficiary schools to meet their growing educational demands.
"What we are witnessing here is a repetition of what happened here (Accra) last year where new school furniture was donated to six schools on time for the new academic year," he said.
Mr Stephen Adu, Director of Basic Education Division, Ghana Education Service, lauded Western Union for the initiative since it will help government in its quest to meet the 2015 Millennium Development Goal on education.
"It is to be noted that the comfort of the child in the classroom is very critical in promoting quality education. It is unfortunate to see situations whereby children use kitchen stools and dilapidated tables in classrooms," he added.
Mr Adu called on corporate entities to support derived schools with the provision of teaching and learning materials, supplementary readers and Information and Communication Technology facilities.
He appealed to the beneficiary schools to take good care of the desks and use them for the intended purpose.
