HISTORY WAS made last Friday when some writers of the arts (entertainment) in Accra met to revive an association which has been shelved for almost half a decade. Sponsored by the Graphic Showbiz, the meeting held at the Busy Internet in Accra, was to deliberate on how the association could stand the test of time and be given the needed focus as well getting every arts and entertainment writer and whosoever was interested in joining to come on board. It was largely attended by writers from the print media, among them Nana Benyin Dadson, editor of the Graphic Showbiz; William Asiedu of the Mirror; Paa John of Charterhouse; DJ Amess; Arnold Asamoah Baidu; Eugene Nkansah; and Nana Ntri, all of the Fyla Magazine. The rest were Isaac Yaboah of P&P; Jacqueline of the Chronicle; Jonathan Thompson of MMS; Ameyaw of Ovation Magazine; Mantse of Jive and a few others including Beatwaves. Each of these personalities spoke, expressing their enthusiasm for the rejuvenation of the association. According to them, art celebrities are not so much respected and so were art writers, even in the newsroom of their respective organisations. Hence, the association would not only aid writers to command some respect and recognition for themselves but serve as an educational platform for them. Other issues which came up in an open discussion hinted on traveling, research and diversity in reportage among other important issues which had been excluded in the culture of Ghanaian art writing. The two-and-half-hour meeting was also used to name the association- Art Writers Association of Ghana (AWAG)- by a majority vote. On Friday April 11, at 2.00pm there would be another meeting to further discus issues relating to the financing of the association among other vital arrangements. The venue of the meeting is however yet to be announced.
