A new angle to the Esther Smith marital saga has emerged, giving it an interesting twist. Last week, it was gathered that popular Gospel singer, Rev. Esther Smith had parted ways with her husband of four years, Rev. Ahinkan Bonsu, a pastor at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. This followed claims that she had given her newly born baby with the pastor to another man in faraway Germany, where she was now staying. According to sources close to the singer, if the man, whose identity was not disclosed, adopted the child, it would make things easier for Esther Smith as regards securing documents for her continued stay in Germany. On Saturday however, DJ Abio of Channel R disclosed on Joy FM that Esther Smith, who had so far spoken only to Holland-based Spirit FM, claimed that she left her husband because of infidelity. According to D. J. Abio, Esther was accusing the pastor of having an affair with their househelp. On the other hand, according to the radio presenter, Esther’s husband was also accusing Esther of infidelity. He said Rev. Bonsu, speaking to him, had accused her of having an affair with other men including one Fiifi, a worker at the Tema Harbour, whom Esther got acquainted with through the Tagoe Sisters. According to him, Rev. Bonsu had said that Fiifi had been pestering Esther long before they got married and continued even after their marriage. “Rev. Bonsu said he even doubts the paternity of two of their children- their second and third- because he claimed Esther had mentioned some other men to him as the fathers of these children. He however, did not provide the names of these men,” the presenter noted. Rev. Bonsu, D. J. Abio said, had spoken on Channel R, where he said he had never known peace ever since he married Esther, because while her father did not sanction the marriage and therefore did not attend the wedding, and that her brothers who were drug addicts had never given him peace. He said Esther’s brothers smoked marijuana, a habit he tried to discourage them from but they became offended and never liked him. The radio presenter also said Esther’s father had expressed his happiness over the fact that the marriage had ended on rocks. D. J. Abio added that he was the MC at the couple’s wedding. He pointed out that Esther had also accused Rev. Bonsu of casting a spell on her. She claimed that it was the spell that made her marry him in the first place, but now, she claimed, the charm had worn off. He revealed that Esther said she once went to perform at Akwatia, where the Rev. Bonsu used to live, and when they met, the pastor gave her a piece of gold as a gift. She said after this she became so fond of him and they got married later. D. J. Abio said according to sources in Holland, Esther now claimed that, that gift of gold was a spell which the Rev. Bonsu cast on her, and that the spell was now broken and the marriage over. He said Esther’s family had returned the dowry and drinks to Rev. Bonsu’s family and they had accepted the items. As a result, therefore, the marriage was dissolved traditionally. He added that Rev. Bonsu had told him the matter was still pending in court. He however denied the charge of casting a spell on Esther, who is currently in Germany. Esther Smith shot to fame with her maiden album ‘Gye No Di’, which won three awards - Gospel Album of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance of the Year - at the 2003 Ghana Music Awards. She followed up in 2004 with another album, ‘Nipa’, which clinched three awards - Best Gospel Album of the Year, Best Song of the Year and the Best Album of the year - at the 2004 GMA.
