The District Director of Health Services for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa (AOB), Dr Gohungo Luiz Amussu, has called on the people of the area to ensure environmental cleanliness in order to prevent the outbreak of diseases especially Malaria. He said records indicated that Malaria was the number one killer disease in the society especially among children and therefore everything must be done to control it. Dr. Amussu made the call at a Malaria Sensitization Programme organized by Humanitarian Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation base in the area, at Breman Kokoso at the weekend. The programme, under the theme "Helping reducing malaria in AOB district", was attended by a large number of people from the District. Dr Amussu said if people observed and embraced cleanliness and good sanitation in their localities, some of the diseases that had been sending people to the health facilities could be avoid. He said government was doing its best to improve the health of the people by constructing more heath facilities and through the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme. He stressed the need for the people to access the existing initiatives to obtain affordable health care delivery, and urged those who had not yet registered under the NHIS to do so before it was too late. Dr Amussu advised the people to sleep under treated Mosquito Nets that had been found to be the best ways of preventing malaria. Mr Dawda Adams, Executive Director of the NGO, took participants through topics including causes, treatment, prevention and control of malaria. He urged them to weed their surroundings, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and destroy mosquito breeding-grounds to help reduce malaria cases in the area. Mr Adams appealed to the people to attend accredited health facilities when they were sick instead of going to quack doctors. Dr Anthony Deyeghe, District Director of Agriculture advised the people to prevent diseases instead of waiting to fall sick before they looked for a cure.
