Contrary to the perception held by her critics that she was bound to fail, the Member of Parliament for Jomoro constituency, Samia Nkrumah is proving her mettle that indeed one can make a difference by going the extra mile to impact significantly on one’s constituents.
So far, Samia, as she is affectionately referred to by her constituents, has sourced funding from outside the traditional government funds to economically empower women through credit facilities.
In an exclusive interview with The New Crusading Guide over the weekend, the daughter of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, she disclosed that, she has used at least 80% of her share of the common fund to support students pursue higher learning education.
It would be recalled that, Samia, in the run up to the 2008 elections, promised to set aside a greater percentage of her MP’s Common Fund, to establish a Tertiary Education Support Scheme to assist brilliant but needy students in the District to pursue tertiary education. She has since as an MP, honored that pledge by instituting the scheme.
In 2009, the MP, through the scheme, was able to assist about 200 students and spent close to GH¢45,000.00 on the scheme. For 2010, she has decided to assist 300 students.
Although she did not want to blow her own trumpet, she disclosed that she had supported the Police to improve on their record keeping and refurbished hospitals. She has also placed on her priority list, the putting up of strategically placed Information Communication Training Centers.“I am currently lobbying some investors to come into our area to explore the viability of investing here (Jomoro)”.
The MP has also assisted a small cocoa growing community of called Kwabre in her constituency with building materials (roofing sheet and cement) for the construction of a community shed. Commenting on her constitutionally mandated responsibility as an MP, she stated, “the job is demanding but I am well conditioned for that since I have resolved to pursue a paradigm shift in the political face of Ghana”.
