The managing editor of the New Crusading guide Kweku Baako Jnr has described President Mills’ call for opening investigations into the murder of women as “a wild goose chase.”
The police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations(FBI) failed to unravel the mystery behind the serial killings but the president has ordered the Inspector General of Police to reopen investigations into the murders which took place about a decade ago.
The prime suspect, Charles Quansah in 2003 confessed to killing nine of the women whiles investigations into the circumstances leading to the deaths of the others have proven futile.
Mr. Baako who was speaking on Joy FM’s current affairs programme, Newsfile on Saturday said he believes the order to reopen the investigations is intended to put to rest ex President Rawlings’ conspiracy theories.
He said “that information that he [Rawlings] said he had should be made available. It does not exist. Take it from me he does not have any such information...The ingredients that the [Daily] Graphic gave for being the basis for this order was the fact that the identities of these ladies was not established, there were no funerals performed [and] their relatives unknown but [for] ninety five percent of the cases, relatives were identified”
He said the information has been clearly documented in the files of the police and should not be a problem. Mr. Baako added that this investigation is being driven by the ruling party’s wrong campaign messages and the belief that aspects of the investigations were hidden from the public.
But deputy minister of Environment and Science, Dr. Omane Boamah in a rebuttal pointed out that government is sure that Charles Quansah is not the only one behind the murders and that it is vital to dig deeper to find those behind the murders.
He explained that government believes the murders should be thoroughly investigated to lay the matter to rest.
He said people should welcome the opportunity and stop bashing government for trying to seek justice for families who have lost dear ones.
